It was a pleasure collaborating with the teams at Duolingo and Adonde Media to produce an attention-grabbing trailer for the latest season of the Duolingo French Language Podcast. One of the project stipulations was that all assets had to come from the public domain, which created an interesting creative challenge and led me to a treatment concept that combined the feels of an old-fashioned news reel and antique scrapbook. My pitch and eventual final product featured a combination of archival footage, posters, and historical photographs satisfying animating in with ink-blot and smoke effects, which we felt captured mystery and allure of the Josephine Baker’s fascinating life. I color graded all assets to have a consistent sepia tone, and added a film grain overlay to complete the final product. This promotional video premiered at Duolingo’s annual conference, Duocon, and has helped generate a record number of new listeners.
